Online payment methods

Prepaid card, e-wallet, money transfer or crypto? Here are the differences, the fees and what to check before you pay online.

Prepaid cards

A prepaid Mastercard or Visa isn't linked to a bank account. You load it in advance and spend up to the balance. That's great for budgeting, though there can be loading, issuing and currency-conversion fees.

Virtual and single-use cards

A virtual card number lives only in your app. Single-use numbers are among the safest ways to pay on an unfamiliar site, because a leaked number can't be reused.

Digital wallets

Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal replace typing in card details, and PayPal adds buyer protection. Check the limits, fees and dispute rules.

International money transfers

With services like Western Union, the real cost is the fee plus the exchange-rate spread. Always compare the amount that will actually arrive.

Bitcoin and crypto

Crypto is fast and independent of banks, but prices are volatile and transactions can't be reversed. Use a regulated platform, turn on two-factor authentication, and check how gains are taxed where you live.

Safety checklist

  • Only pay on https sites you recognise.
  • Never share PINs, one-time codes or photos of your card.
  • Turn on a notification for every charge.
